The Progress Indicator Design Pattern

Progress indicators show the user what steps they have completed, how many are remaining, and their current section. Each step is usually numbered or illustrated in a way the shows progression.

Progress indicators show the user the length of the process and informs them on what to expect throughout the flow. It is important that each step listed in the progress indicator is labeled to give the user an idea of what is to come.

Progress indicators are often used for sign-up or checkout processes that require a lot of information. Using this pattern effectively can greatly increase the user experience of long forms and decrease drop-off rates.
